HISTORY

Throughout our history, the YWCA has been in the forefront of most major movements in the United States as a pioneer in race relations, labor union representation, and the empowerment of women.

1912
YWCA of Hall County organized

1913
High School YWCA affiliated with Hall County organized

1933
Gym classes for unemployed were started

1937
Little Theater group organized

1943
YWCA instrumental in starting City Recreation

1947
Grand Island Community Chest was formed with YWCA as a member Agency

1949
YWCA in cooperation with VAV’s and the Council of Church Women United were instrumental in starting Grand Island chapter of Mental Health Association

1956
Golden Age Club initiated for senior citizens

1977
School of Dance started

1978 
HELPLINE formed

1978
Live Y’ers Preschool began

1982
BIG SISTERS came to Grand Island at the YWCA

1986
Almost Home began at YWCA

1986
Woman of Distinction honor was initiated by the YWCA

1989
Teen Parent and Child Care Center began

Y-Wrap/Girl’s Circle Program for elementary aged girls began

First Table Talk session held at YWCA

Added awards for the Young Woman of Achievement and Woman of Courage to the Women of Distinction banquet

YWCA started celebrating Stand Against Racism

Youth Band was organized at the YWCA
