Dedicated. Committed. Passionate. Encourager. Leader. These words describe our 2019 Woman of Distinction, Bonnie Hinkle.
“Bonnie Hinkle is the unsung hero of the school district who is too humble to tell her own story,” one of Bonnie’s nominators said. “Bonnie exemplifies putting others before yourself. She puts 10,000 public school students first every day,” another nominator stated.
Elected to the Grand Island Public Schools board in 2007, Bonnie served as vice president for 2 years, and has been serving as president since 2015. During her time as president, Bonnie ed a successful bond issue which allowed for improvements to existing schools and for the building of new elementary schools.
Bonnie embodies the mission of the YWCA. She led the district in the hiring of the first female district superintendent. She has encouraged other women to run for the school board and acts as a mentor to women serving on the school board.
Bonnie has personally led professional development training for the board and district leadership on equitable practices for all. She was instrumental in forming an equity task force. She is leading the current school board in being intentional in the elimination of racism and other stereotypes that keep students from finding success. In addition to her role with the GIPS board, she is a graduate of Leadership Tomorrow, past Booster Club president, Destination Imagination team organizer, and an active member of Peace Lutheran Church.
